Trump Says Iran War Will Be Over Soon as Talks Progress

President Donald Trump said Friday the conflict with Iran will be over soon, expressing optimism as diplomatic contacts continued despite persistent tensions. Speaking at an event in Suffern, New York, Trump said the U.S. had stopped Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and that the situation would be resolved quickly.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported slight progress in negotiations during a NATO meeting in Sweden but cautioned against exaggerating movement. Iran’s Tasnim news agency cited a source close to the negotiating team saying talks were ongoing with a focus on securing an end to the war before addressing other matters.

Trump had said earlier in the week that he was holding off on military strikes because serious negotiations were underway. He has repeatedly set and extended deadlines for Tehran while threatening to resume attacks if a deal is not reached. The ceasefire declared in mid-April left core war goals unfulfilled.

Key disputes remain over Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile and control of the Strait of Hormuz. Pakistan, Qatar and other mediators have intensified efforts to bridge gaps. Rubio said Washington needs a plan B if diplomacy fails to reopen the strait, through which about one-fifth of global oil normally flows.
