Union Cabinet Approves Production of 2 Billion Polymer Banknotes for Rs 10 and Rs 20

The Union Cabinet approved the production of 2 billion polymer-based banknotes in denominations of Rs 10 and Rs 20 to evaluate the physical durability and longevity of synthetic currency notes under tropical climatic conditions.

The central bank initiative aims to test whether polymer banknotes offer enhanced resistance to soil, moisture, and tearing compared to traditional cotton-paper currency notes.

Field trials will be conducted across select geographic zones to assess public acceptance and automated teller machine handling before considering wider currency adoption.
