Union Government officially dissolves apex Digital Communications Commission under Department of Telecommunications

The Union Government officially notified the dissolution of the Digital Communications Commission, the apex inter-ministerial decision-making council operating under the Department of Telecommunications. Originally constituted as the Telecom Commission in 1989 and rechristened in 2018, the panel historically exercised broad administrative, financial, and policy-making authority over national communications networks and spectrum allocation strategies.

Government notifications indicated that the structural overhaul is designed to eliminate bureaucratic duplication, expedite critical policy approvals, and modernize telecommunications governance in alignment with the Telecommunications Act. The operational responsibilities and financial sanctioning powers formerly held by the commission will be delegated directly to modernized executive committees within the Ministry of Communications and related statutory bodies.

Telecommunications analysts viewed the administrative sunsetting as a progressive step toward nimble regulatory governance in an era characterized by rapid technological innovation in satellite communications and optical fiber infrastructure. The streamlined administrative structure is expected to accelerate spectrum auction clearances, right-of-way dispute adjudications, and domestic manufacturing subsidies.
