The University of Copenhagen has disclosed a major cybersecurity incident that resulted in the unauthorized exposure of personal information and physical access credentials belonging to approximately 525,000 individuals. The compromised records include details pertaining to current and former students, academic personnel, administrative staff, and external campus partners who held institutional affiliations.
According to institutional notifications, the exposed information encompassed names, identification numbers, institutional contact details, and campus personal identification number (PIN) access codes used for electronic building and facility doors. University security personnel moved quickly to revoke the compromised access codes, reset digital authentication systems, and launch an internal forensic audit alongside external cybersecurity specialists.
The Danish Data Protection Agency and law enforcement authorities were notified of the intrusion in compliance with European Union General Data Protection Regulation mandates. University officials confirmed that while physical door credentials and directory records were compromised, core academic grading databases and central financial systems remained insulated from the breach.
