West Bengal Unrest as BJP Takes Power for First Time After Decades of TMC and Left Rule

Street protests and political violence erupted across West Bengal following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s historic election victory, the first time the party has captured power in a state long dominated by the Trinamool Congress and the Left Front.

Clashes between rival supporters were reported in multiple districts after the May 4 results. The TMC alleged that a party worker was killed in Birbhum’s Nanoor area, while the BJP accused opponents of impersonating its cadres to create disorder and mislead voters about the transition process.

Security forces deployed additional personnel in sensitive areas as both parties held competing rallies. Governor RN Ravi dissolved the outgoing assembly on May 7 under Article 174, clearing the path for a new BJP-led government after the five-year term expired.

Analysts warned that the transition period poses risks of sustained unrest in a state where political competition has frequently turned violent, particularly in rural belt districts with histories of factional conflict. The BJP secured 207 seats compared with 80 for the TMC in the 294-member assembly.

State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya announced the May 9 swearing-in schedule while calling for calm during the transition. Central paramilitary forces remained deployed in several districts where post-election clashes injured dozens of people according to local hospital records.
