India Upgrades Ties with Cyprus to Strategic Partnership in Milestone Diplomatic Visit

India and Cyprus upgraded bilateral ties to a strategic partnership during President Nikos Christodoulides’ visit to New Delhi, signing a 56-point joint declaration covering trade, defence, technology and cultural cooperation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Christodoulides held talks on May 22 focused on expanding economic links, maritime security and India-European Union engagement. The leaders noted progress since a comprehensive partnership declaration signed in 2025, including increased business engagement and defence contacts.

Christodoulides arrived with a delegation including foreign, transport and research ministers plus a 60-member business contingent. Both sides welcomed growing engagement between startups, venture capital networks and innovation agencies, and noted India’s recent trade agreement with the European Union as a broader context for cooperation.

Cyprus positioned the visit as a bridge for Indian firms entering European markets, while India sought stronger Mediterranean partnerships amid shifting global trade patterns and energy security concerns linked to Middle East instability affecting shipping routes.

Secretary West Sibi George briefed reporters on outcomes from the Modi-Christodoulides talks, noting agreements on diplomatic training between India’s Sushma Swaraj Institute and Cyprus’s Diplomatic Academy. The Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers signed a separate MoU with the Cyprus Defence and Space Industry Cluster.

Modi and Christodoulides also discussed cooperation on cyber resilience and secure digital ecosystems during their bilateral talks.
