BJP Wins West Bengal for First Time in Party History Raising Questions About Vote Integrity

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s historic victory in West Bengal’s state elections has raised questions from opposition parties about the integrity of the electoral process. The BJP won a majority for the first time in the state, ending decades of rule by the Trinamool Congress and the Left Front.

Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee has questioned voter list revisions conducted ahead of the polls. Opposition parties alleged irregularities in electoral roll updates that removed names of eligible voters. Election officials have defended the revision process as legally mandated and transparent.

Political analysts said the BJP benefited from anti-incumbency, religious polarization and defections from the Trinamool Congress. Suvendu Adhikari, a former TMC leader, is widely expected to become chief minister. Street protests and sporadic violence followed the results in parts of the state.

International observers noted the scale of the BJP’s gains in a state where the party previously held minimal representation. Congress and left parties also performed poorly. The Election Commission has not announced any re-polling. Banerjee has refused to resign as TMC chief despite losing the chief minister’s office.

Al Jazeera analysis said the BJP’s victory raised questions about the integrity of the electoral roll revision process conducted before the April-May polls. The BJP also retained Assam for a third consecutive term in elections held during the same cycle. Suvendu Adhikari is widely expected to be sworn in as chief minister.
