Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said Trump has made the assertion multiple times across different countries and platforms, including claims that trade pressure was used to halt hostilities. Ramesh asked when Modi would respond and questioned whether the prime minister’s silence implied acceptance of Trump’s narrative.
The dispute centers on Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. Trump has said on social media and in public remarks that he helped secure a full and immediate ceasefire after talks mediated by Washington.
India has consistently maintained that the cessation of firing was negotiated directly between the two countries’ military leadership through existing hotline channels, without third-party mediation. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has reiterated that position in interviews and parliamentary briefings. Congress has demanded the government clarify the circumstances and object to what it calls the hyphenation of India and Pakistan in Trump’s statements.
Congress launched a nationwide Jai Hind Sabha campaign from May 20 to May 30 demanding clarity on the ceasefire circumstances. Trump has also said the truce was done as a favour to Pakistan’s leadership. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick made similar claims in a May court filing, according to Congress.
