Annamalai quits BJP, to start new political ‘movement’

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai resigned from the party on June 2, 2026, and plans to launch a separate political movement that may become a regional party.

Annamalai submitted his resignation to BJP president J.P. Nadda in New Delhi after meetings with senior leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He also handed over a note on the party’s performance in the recent assembly elections.

Associates said the new platform would emphasise Tamil identity with a national outlook and could launch within six to eight months. Differences centred on the BJP’s renewed alliance with the AIADMK and candidate selection strategies.

Annamalai, a former IPS officer who led the state unit from 2021 to 2025, remained visible in Tamil Nadu politics through statewide campaigns. He has not yet announced a formal name or launch date for the new organisation.
