BRICS member states accelerate plans for CBDC cross-border payment mechanism ahead of Delhi Summit

Finance ministers and central bank governors representing BRICS member nations finalized technical architecture to operationalize an interoperable central bank digital currency settlement network ahead of the 18th Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi.

The collaborative digital financial platform, structured under the BRICS Pay framework, aims to facilitate direct multi-currency trade clearance, bilateral cross-border remittances, and commodity settlement without routing transactions through Western banking intermediaries or the SWIFT messaging network. Working groups comprising technical specialists from the Reserve Bank of India, People’s Bank of China, and Central Bank of Brazil established distributed ledger protocols designed to lower foreign exchange conversion overheads.

Financial delegates noted that the initiative addresses growing vulnerabilities stemming from geopolitical sanctions and dollar liquidity shortages across emerging markets. Under the proposed blueprint, national commercial lenders within member states will gain access to direct wholesale digital liquidity bridges backed by sovereign local currency reserves.

The New Development Bank in Shanghai was designated as the primary clearing and dispute resolution conduit to oversee liquidity management across participating digital wallets. Trade federations across member states welcomed the move, noting that small and medium-scale exporters often endure disproportionately high foreign exchange transfer fees when conducting intra-bloc trade.

Senior economic advisors in New Delhi noted that pilot transaction trials conducted between participating state-owned lenders demonstrated settlement finality within seconds, eliminating multi-day transit friction typical of correspondent banking routes. Technical committees finalized cryptographic standards to ensure sovereign regulatory compliance while preventing financial crime.

Diplomatic sherpas confirmed that a binding multilateral protocol establishing regulatory sandboxes and consumer privacy protections will be tabled for formal head-of-state ratification during plenary sessions in the Indian capital.
