The Indian Navy formally commissioned INS Nipun, an indigenously engineered diving support and submarine rescue vessel, during an official military ceremony held at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam.
Constructed by Hindustan Shipyard Limited under the Nistar-class vessel project, INS Nipun measures approximately 118 meters in length with a displacement of over 9,000 tonnes. The specialized platform represents an advanced maritime engineering achievement, incorporating more than 80 percent indigenous content in line with national defense manufacturing priorities. The ship is designed to conduct complex deep-sea diving operations, submarine rescue missions, underwater salvage, and offshore surveillance across the Indian Ocean Region.
Equipped with advanced saturation diving equipment, deep-submergence rescue vehicle mating systems, and dynamic positioning thrusters, INS Nipun allows naval divers to operate safely at extreme oceanic depths. Naval commanders noted that the platform will also serve as a key asset for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions during maritime crises.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior defense officials, naval architects, and shipyard executives, marking a milestone in India’s naval self-reliance strategy and underwater operational preparedness.
Defense Ministry officials highlighted that INS Nipun’s sister vessel, INS Nirdeshak, is also undergoing sea trials to expand the Eastern and Western Naval Commands’ deep-water salvage footprint. The induction reduces India’s reliance on foreign charter vessels during deep-sea emergencies, providing the Indian Navy with sovereign capabilities to operate side-scan sonars, remotely operated submersibles, and diver decompression complexes across the wider Indo-Pacific.
