A fire at the Flourish Stay bed-and-breakfast in Hauz Rani, Malviya Nagar, killed at least 21 people on June 3, 2026, Delhi police and fire officials said.
The blaze tore through a five-storey building used as lodging for medical tourists and relatives visiting a nearby private hospital. Authorities said many victims were foreign nationals from African and South Asian countries.
More than 40 people were rescued. Police registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and detained building owner Lavkesh Bajaj. Officials said the property lacked a valid fire safety certificate and had a single entry-exit point.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ex gratia of 200,000 rupees for the next of kin of those killed and 50,000 rupees for the injured. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi said it would seal unauthorised commercial buildings in the south zone following the incident.
Fire officer A.K. Malik said the structure had a basement, ground floor and five upper levels, with a restaurant on the ground floor and lodging above. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta called the deaths a heartbreaking tragedy as hospitals treated dozens of survivors.
