Mob attacks police outpost in Shahjahanpur, claims rape accused is ‘innocent’; three held

A crowd stormed a police outpost in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday, demanding that officers release a man held on rape accusations and declaring him innocent, authorities said.

Officers said protesters damaged property, hurled objects and attempted to force entry before reinforcements arrived to restore order.

Police arrested three participants accused of leading the assault on the outpost and inciting others to obstruct lawful custody procedures.

The rape suspect remained in detention as investigators continued interviewing the complainant and collecting forensic evidence.

District officials appealed for calm, warning that attacking law enforcement undermines due process regardless of public sentiment about any individual case.

Women’s rights groups condemned the mob action, arguing that street pressure must not substitute for court adjudication in sexual assault matters.

Shahjahanpur authorities said additional units will guard the outpost while prosecutors prepare charges against those arrested in the riot.
