Russian defense ministry claims over 500 Ukrainian drones intercepted across 18 regions

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that its air defense units and electronic warfare installations intercepted more than 500 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles during a widespread overnight attack covering 18 regions.

According to military statements released in Moscow, interception operations took place across western border oblasts as well as industrial zones located deep within Russian territory. Officials confirmed that debris from intercepted drones ignited an industrial fire near the Ust-Luga gas and fuel transshipment terminal in the Leningrad region. Specialized firefighting brigades and emergency industrial response units worked for several hours to contain the blaze and prevent damage to primary hydrocarbon processing reservoirs.

Civil aviation regulators imposed temporary ground stops at multiple regional commercial airports, including facilities serving Moscow and Saint Petersburg, to eliminate collision risks with incoming drones and defensive interceptor fire. Flights resumed standard operating schedules following the termination of air defense alerts.

Ukrainian defense officials did not formally comment on specific operational targets, consistent with standard security practice. The large-scale drone operation represents a continuing effort to target logistics corridors, refining facilities, and military airfields within Russian borders.

The Ust-Luga complex serves as one of Russia’s primary Baltic transport gateways, processing condensate and refined petroleum products for export to international markets. Leningrad regional authorities established an inter-agency working group to review perimeter defenses around critical petrochemical installations and evaluate fire suppression networks across regional storage depots.
